Then she came back and accused him of fathering the child she was carrying. He was devastated. His mother heard, of course; he had a real job of convincing Nora it wasn’t him. Hell, the silly bitch could have been with anyone. She was trying to ruin him; she just wanted a meal ticket, and he wasn’t going to be it.

He was careful after that. What he needed was a steady girl, who was a bit prim and proper, or sheltered. That would show his mother he was a good sort.

Then George had arrived in his mother’s life. Carl hadn’t seen that coming and was really put out. What was she thinking about? She was old, and past dating, and surely, she didn’t have sex anymore? Then she went a step too far, when she invited George to live with them. It turned his stomach to think what she got up to behind that closed bedroom door. Carl had laid down an ultimatum; it was George or him. The result didn’t go his way. The crazy old cow had said George was staying. He was stunned. She told him that she didn’t have many years in front of her and she was going to make the most of them with George; that Carl had all his life in front of him and he should be happy for them. She had been alone a long time.

Alone? Nora had never been alone; she had had him. Now, she was rejecting him for that interloper. In a fit of pique, he told her he would go. He was equally shocked, when Nora said ‘When?’ Lord, what had he done? His mother had looked after him, fed him; he paid very little to her for the roof over his head. Where was he to go now? His wage had mainly been his own pocket money. He had a bit of a thing with the horses and the dogs; he enjoyed a flutter. When the bet came in, it was better than sex and he did enjoy sex. If he needed a woman, well! He paid for it and would do so until he got married.

Sandra lived practically on his doorstep. He saw her every day, on the street or at the bus stop, and the way she looked at him, he knew he was onto a winner. She was ideal.

When he left home, Sandra’s mother had taken him in. For a long time, he had to live as his alter ego. Watch his language, and have good manners. Smile a lot, and of course, be helpful to the poor ladies. He even had to give up betting for a while. It was all very boring but in the long run he knew it would pay dividends.

Sandra was malleable. He would be able to mould her into just what he wanted, and best of all, when she came, she came with income and property.

He had liked her at first, and he still did in a funny way.
